Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj, successfully treated a one-year-old child from Uzbekistan who was suffering from Alagille syndrome, a rare genetic liver disorder, through a liver transplant. The child’s father donated a portion of his liver. The surgery was performed in October last year, and the child was discharged a month later. Doctors confirmed during a follow-up visit this month that the child is now doing well.

Ajitabh Srivastava, Director of the Hospital’s HPB Surgery and Liver Transplant Department, said that the child developed jaundice soon after birth and was initially misdiagnosed with biliary atresia, following which a Kasai procedure was performed at two months of age. As the child’s condition worsened, further evaluation at Max Hospital revealed Alagille syndrome. After the successful transplant, the child now has an opportunity for a healthier future.
